ORIGINS

China, 1965–1981 — the original movement

During China's Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao faced an impossible problem: a nation of 800 million people, most of them rural, with virtually no access to trained physicians. His solution was radical and effective. He mobilised peasant farmers with basic medical training — acupuncture, herbal medicine, first aid, preventive care — and sent them back into their communities as healthcare workers. They worked in their rice fields wearing no shoes, treating their neighbours. They were called chijiao yisheng — Barefoot Doctors. Within a decade, life expectancy across rural China rose dramatically. The World Health Organisation declared the programme one of the most successful public health initiatives of the 20th century. The model spread to Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. The lesson was permanent: you do not need a hospital to heal a community. You need people with purpose, knowledge, and the willingness to act.

The original Barefoot Doctors carried acupuncture needles in one pocket and herbal remedies in the other. They were trusted precisely because they were neighbours, not strangers in white coats. They removed the gatekeepers. They brought healthcare to the people. That is the spirit this project reclaims — updated for the 21st century crisis on our doorstep.

THE OPIOID - FENTANYL CRISIS:

The need has never been greater

North America is in the grip of the worst addiction crisis in recorded history. Fentanyl and synthetic opioids are killing tens of thousands every year. Complex chronic pain — undertreated, misunderstood, and catastrophically over-medicated — has become a primary driver of addiction. Our healthcare system, designed for acute care and pharmaceutical management, and the “maintenance brain disease model has no adequate answer.

Bio-electrode Therapy (BeT) draws on four thousand years of Classical Chinese Medicine — specifically the Jing-Well point system, and the meridian network — and integrates it with the modern physics of bioelectricity. The protocols are simple. The materials are inexpensive. The results are real. And they are accessible to anyone willing to learn.

MISSION STATEMENT

To build a global, peer-led, ungated network of BeT practitioners who bring safe, non-toxic, non-invasive pain management and addiction support directly to the people who need it — regardless of income, geography, or access to formal healthcare — through the simple, learnable protocols of Bio-electrode Therapy.

The tools exist. The knowledge exists. What has been missing is an army of people willing to use them. This is not a clinic. It is not an institution or franchise. It is not a certification body.

It is a movement — decentralised, voluntary, and driven entirely by the desire to relieve suffering. Think of it as an association of kindred spirits. People who looked at the crisis, felt the urgency, and decided to act. The BeT Barefoot Doctor Project exists to connect those people, equip them with protocols, and get out of the way.

Who is a BeT Barefoot Doctor?

You do not need a licence. You do not need insurance. You do not need to register anywhere or pay any fee. The only requirement is a genuine desire to provide relief to those who are suffering. Those who already carry relevant knowledge and compassion are especially well placed to lead locally.

  • TCM practitioners and acupuncturists (current and retired)

  • NADA-trained auricular acupuncture practitioners

  • Addiction counsellors and recovery support workers

  • Social workers and community health workers

  • Parents, family members, and loved ones of those in addiction

  • Recovery café workers, shelter staff, and peer support volunteers

  • Nurses, physiotherapists, and allied health workers

  • Anyone with the heart to learn and the willingness to act

"Trust the thousands of years of Chinese Medicine knowledge and the modern physics of bioelectricity. The need is great, the tools are available, the protocols are simple. Just do it."

THE TOOLS

What you will be working with

BeT uses small copper and silver electrodes — or the very convenient Sakamura Magrain gold and silver-plated pellets, and the fully illustrated protocols of the Jing-Well acupuncture points — to deliver safe, non-invasive microcurrent therapy. The materials are low-cost, portable, and require no other electrical equipment or clinic infrastructure. Your body is electrical in nature, and we simply harness and direct this healing energy using the simple protocols.

The entry-level “All-Meridian Contralateral Jing-Well Protocol” is a basic approach for supporting acute addiction withdrawal and early recovery. It may also be used for a range of systemic disease conditions. More advanced protocols address acute and chronic pain, depression, and PTSD conditions that often contribute to dependency on pharmaceutical medications. This is an integrative democratic medicine “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

All the color illustrated protocols are available in the clinical manual “Treating Complex Pain and Addictions with Bio-electrode Therapy” or the app;  http://bio-electrodetherapy.com  This website exists as the living community information resource— the place where Barefoot Doctors share what they learn in the field. This is about empowerment with a purpose.

IMPORTANT NOTE: It is strongly advised against relying solely on detoxification and withdrawal management as a standalone treatment for opioid dependency. This approach poses significant risks, as individuals who relapse post-withdrawal often experience a rapid decline in opioid tolerance, heightening the likelihood of overdose. Instead, a comprehensive strategy incorporating medical, social, and ideally family support is deemed essential. BeT is a unique adjunctive integrative medicine approach to be used along with counselling and residential treatment if and when these services are available.
