Securing BeT Electrodes for Prolonged Treatment

Challenge:

Electrodes often detach due to handwashing, skin oils, sweating, or friction (e.g., pockets, clothing). This reduces treatment time, disrupts the healing electrical field (EF), and lowers compliance.

Solution:

A layered adhesion strategy using silicone adhesive and polyurethane (PU) patches ensures prolonged electrode security and uninterrupted electrical field therapy.

Step-by-Step Adhesion Method

  1. Prepare the Skin

    • Thoroughly clean acupuncture points with an alcohol swab.

  2. Apply Electrodes

    • Secure electrodes at prescribed points, ensuring correct polarity.

    • Allow the electrodes to dry.

  3. Seal Electrodes with Silicone Adhesive

    • Using a doe-foot applicator bottle, dab a thin layer of Westmore Silicone Adhesive directly over each electrode.

    • This creates a tacky, sweat-resistant seal that blocks skin oils and moisture.

  4. Reinforce With PU Patches

    • Place polyurethane patches (or “pimple patches”) on top of the silicone-sealed electrodes.

    • The tacky silicone base allows PU patches to grip securely.

  5. Handwashing Precautions

    • Wash hands only in cold water.

    • Avoid hot water, which may soften and loosen adhesives.

    • Pat dry; do not rub.

Clinical Notes

  • Why this works: The continuous EF stimulus drives the healing process. Pain or symptoms often return when electrodes fall off, not because BeT fails, but because the healing process was interrupted.

  • Compliance benefit: This method ensures stable long-term adhesion, especially important in addiction treatment, where patients may be less likely to reapply electrodes.

  • Alternative option: Consider testing New Skin® Liquid Bandage as a lower-cost substitute for silicone adhesive. It also creates a barrier base for PU patches and comes with a brush applicator.
